What General Information Do I Need To Know About This Position?

Salary: $77,999 (Step 01) to $101,399 (Step 10); NOTE: First time hires to the Federal Government are typically hired at the Step 01.

Duties

As a Research Ecologist within the Fort Collins Science Center, some of your specific duties will include:

  • Work with co-investigators in Colorado to develop long-term research strategies to support control and containment of invasive reptiles, with a focus on Florida and the Caribbean.
  • Propose, develop, and conduct rigorous ecological research on invasive reptiles.
  • Oversee and coordinate the activities of 2-4 lower-graded USGS co-workers and provide oversight of an intern program that is co-managed by cooperators.
  • Conduct quality assurance over incoming data, analyze data using cutting-edge quantitative tools, and publish results in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Conduct fieldwork in challenging subtropical conditions, and capture, euthanize and necropsy invasive reptiles and amphibians.
  • Ensure that permits, animal care protocols, annual reports, manuscript reviews, and similar documents are accurate and completed on time.
Physical Demands/Work Environment:  Some field sites are remote and access is often by foot over terrain that is steep, slippery, densely vegetated, muddy, and/or of poor visibility, occasionally with additional hazards in the form of unexploded ordnance, metal debris, or other hazards typical of military lands. Some sites contain venomous or otherwise dangerous vertebrates including study subjects, biting/stinging insects, contact­poisonous plants, and other hazards. The incumbent must therefore be able to conduct field work in physically challenging environments, be willing to occasionally endure primitive camping conditions, and confidently traverse challenging terrain while avoiding potential threats and transporting 25 or more pounds of essential instruments and
equipment.

    Vacancy Related Questions: As part of the online application process, you will need to respond to a series of questions designed to assess your possession of the following knowledge skills, abilities and/or competencies: 

    1)  Demonstrated ability to publish original research results of ecological significance in high impact journals.

    2)  Knowledge of statistical/quantitative principles and methods as they apply to the design and analysis of field studies in ecology or herpetology, as demonstrated by serving in a major or leading role in developing relevant publications, reports, software improvements or other deliverables.

    3)  Research experience with the biology of reptiles and amphibians, including field studies of the ecology of reptiles and amphibians.

    4)  Knowledge of appropriate subject areas from the following list: invasion biology, animal behavior, conservation, vertebrate pest management, population biology, or design of early detection and rapid response programs, as demonstrated by articles, reports, coursework, or other items that demonstrate expertise in that subject area.

    5)  Ability to conduct field work in physically challenging environments.

    Basis of rating:  Category rating will be used in the ranking and selection process for this position. The quality categories are Best Qualified, Well Qualified, and Qualified. You will be rated on the extent and quality of your experience, education, and training relevant to the duties of the position.     Qualifications:
    Basic Education Requirement: Applicants must meet A below to satisfy the basic education requirement for an Ecologist, all grade levels.

    A. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor’s or higher degree in biology or a related field of science underlying ecological research that included at least 30 semester hours or the equivalent in basic and applied biological sciences. These hours must have included at least 9 semester hours or the equivalent in ecology, and 12 semester hours or the equivalent in physical and mathematical sciences.

    For GS-12:

    In Addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, if you are qualifying based on specialized experience, you must have one year of appropriate specialized research experience that is in botany/biology or other relevant fields of biological, physical, chemical, and ecological science principles applicable to in order to conduct conventional aspects of ecological investigations. 

    The scientist has demonstrated skill in presenting clear, concise and logical communications, both oral and written, at scientific meetings and in peer-reviewed journals. Also, scientist has knowledge and experience working on a multi-faceted research project with multiple scientists and demonstrated ability in successfully coordinating research efforts among collaborators from multiple institutions.

    Examples of GS-11 level work may include: Publishing research papers in peer-reviewed journals as evidenced by authorship on 2 or more papers; conducting extensive field research on reptiles and/or amphibians; overseeing the field activities of assistants, interns, students, or employees; and preparation/submission of research permits or animal care protocols.


    OR 

    Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in a directly related field of study. 

    OR 

    A combination of successfully completed progressive graduate level education, as described above, that is beyond the second year of graduate study and professional experience, as described above.
