Duties

As a Research Fish Biologist within the Columbia Environmental Research Center, some of your specific duties will include:



  • Plan and conduct investigations in support of complex, multidisciplinary research projects.

  • Serve as project investigator.

  • Design and conduct behavioral investigations.

  • Formulate new methods and approaches.

  • Write proposals to secure based and/or reimbursable funds.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS


The work requires some physical exertion such as walking over wet, rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces; and bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, or similar activities. The work requires moderate physical ability and average agility and dexterity.


WORK ENVIRONMENT


Work is performed in an office, laboratory, and/or in the field. The office is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated. Temperature and weather extremes may be encountered in the performance of the outdoor work. Field and laboratory duties may require the use of special protective gear. The incumbent is expected to conduct duties in a safe and orderly manner so as not to endanger self, fellow workers, or property with which entrusted.

    Evaluations:

    --Basis of Rating: Category rating will be used in the ranking and selection process for this position. The quality categories are Best Qualified, Well Qualified, and Qualified. If you meet the basic qualification and eligibility requirements of this position, you will be contacted via email after the vacancy announcement closes and given 5 calendar days to submit narrative responses that address the knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) required to perform the duties of this position. You will be rated and ranked based on the information you provide in your resume as well as the responses you submit to the required KSAs. Veterans' preference rules for category rating will be applied. The knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this position are as follows:
    1. Professional knowledge of fishery biology theories, concepts, and principles and a working knowledge of related disciplines, including biology, chemistry, physiology and ecology in order to conduct complex biological investigations.
    2. Knowledge of the scientific methods necessary to develop and carry out research study plans and proposals. Must possess skill in initiating studies, exercising independent judgment and making decisions concerning changes in plans, designs and procedures.
    3. Knowledge and experience in understanding how chemical stimuli such as food attractants, predator cues or pheromones mediate physiological and behavioral responses in fish.  Must have some knowledge in conducting an olfaction assay on various fish species.
    4. Ability to analyze complex biological data sets and utilize specialized software in order to evaluate varied behavioral response and to assess risk associated with proposed aquatic invasive species control measures and the impacts to non-target species. Knowledge of computer software including GIS, SAS, R, Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and Sigmaplot in order to compile and perform analyses on data, and to create figures, table and text to publishing standards.
    5. Ability to effectively communicate research findings both in written and oral form, including presentation of data and analyses, organization and preparation of scientific reports requiring a minimum of reviewing and editing.

    Qualifications:

    Basic Education Requirement:


    Applicants must show that they have a degree with major study in biology, zoology, or biological oceanography that included at least 30 semester hours in biological and aquatic science and 15 semester hours in the physical and mathematical sciences. This course work must have included:



    • At least 15 semester hours of preparatory training in zoology beyond introductory biology or zoology in such courses as invertebrate zoology, comparative anatomy, histology, physiology, embryology, advanced vertebrate zoology, genetics, entomology, and parasitology; and

    • At least 6 semester hours of training applicable to fishery biology in such subjects as fishery biology, ichthyology, limnology, oceanography, algology, planktonology, marine or fresh water ecology, invertebrate ecology, principles of fishery population dynamics, or related course work in the field of fishery biology; and

    • At least 15 semester hours of training in any combination of two or more of the following: chemistry, physics, mathematics, or statistics.


    For GS-11: If you are qualifying based on specialized experience, you must meet the requirements listed below:


    One year of appropriate professional experience in fishery biology that is equivalent to at least the GS-09 level in the Federal service. Examples of GS-9 level work may include: Provide assistance and technical support in the design, coordination, and implementation of controlled biological and behavioral experiments to evaluate effectiveness of various control strategies on Asian Carp; use of advanced sonar and telemetry techniques for characterizing fish behavior and assessing fish abundance.
