Summary:

The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) manages the exploration and development of the nation's offshore resources. Duties

This position is located within the Department of the Interior, Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Gulf of Mexico, OCS Region, Office of Environment, Biological and Social Sciences Section in Jefferson, LA.


The incumbent will perform a variety of administrative and technical support functions for the office.


At the full performance level (GS-06) the major duties of this position include, but are not limited to the following:



  1. Receives, reads, and controls all incoming correspondence, reports, instructions, etc., and screens out those items that can be personally handled or forwarded to other staff.

  2. Performs a variety of administrative data entry, data quality control, and report production from various database systems.

  3. Maintains proper time and attendance records and documentation for BSSS staff.

  4. Makes all necessary arrangements for travel, arranging schedules of visits, making housing and transportation reservations, notifying organizations and officials to be visited, and submitting travel vouchers and reports.

  5. Receives telephone calls, visitors, and messages and provides general information.

  6. Assists in all phases of employee In/Out processing.

  7. Maintains the annual fiscal-year conference and training list; works with management and staff on estimated cost; keeps track of actual costs; prepares monthly reconciled cost report. Keeps management informed of changes.


BOEM has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for telework and the selectee may be allowed to telework with supervisor approval.


This vacancy may be used to fill additional positions as vacancies become available. 


Salary Information:


GS-06: $37,223 - $48,385 per annum.


First time hires to the Federal government normally start at the lower salary range of the grade level.

Candidates placed in the “Platinum” category will be identified for referral to the hiring manager and may be invited for an interview.  Veterans' preference rules for category rating will be applied.



    1. Administrative Support: Knowledge of organizational functions and procedures of an office to perform clerical and administrative support duties.

    2. Office Automation: Ability to use office automation systems such as Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Access, Excel, etc.) and to use several types of software for various office needs.

    3. Oral Communication: Skills in order to communicate effectively with professional, technical, and clerical support staff within and outside the office, visitors, and general public.

    4. Written Communication: Skills to prepare clear, concise documents and reports that describe the collection techniques and other processes and procedures used, conditions of program operations, and recommended improvements.

    Qualifications:

    Minimum Qualification Requirements:

    To qualify for this position you must meet the Specialized Experience for the grade to which you are applying.  

    Specialized Experience:
    To qualify for the GS-06, you must possess at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 level in the Federal service, or comparable experience not gained through Federal service. Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Specialized experience is defined as demonstrated experience: 1) answering and directing phone calls; 2) maintaining a filing, storage retrieval, transfer and/or disposition of records; 3) processing or auditing time and attendance records; and 4) performing database queries to run reports.    


    Typing proficiency:  In addition to meeting the qualification requirements for the GS-06 grade level above, all applicants must show possession of 40 words per minute typing speed.  Applicants must show typing proficiency by submitting a certificate of proficiency from a school or other organization authorized to issue such certificates by the Office of Personnel Management local office, OR by self-certifying their proficiency.
