Physical demands: Indoor office work necessitates long hours of sitting, intense concentration, answering/dialing the telephone, operating computer terminals including computerized engineering drafting stations. Field work requires extended periods of vehicular and foot travel over steep uneven and rocky mountainous and desert terrain in all types of adverse weather conditions, and considerable strength, stamina, and agility for stooping/bending/lifting. Work requires the ability to effectively cope with pressures associated with both fixed and irregular deadlines, and managing multiple priorities.

Work Environment: Work is routinely performed in a properly heated/cooled indoor office setting and outdoors (in extremely hot/cold/windy/dry/wet weather, rugged terrain, remote sites, and at construction sites) and occasionally at public meetings. Work hazards may include but are not limited to; remote areas (unpopulated and semi-populated), crossing mountainous streams, lightning, wildfires, proximity to animals (both wild and domestic), poisonous snakes, poison oak, stinging insects, foot and vehicular travel in rain/snow/ice on uneven steep mountainous terrain/winding roads, which may include heavy brush or debris accumulations, construction sites (falling objects, chemicals, dust, noise, heavy construction equipment) and proximity to mechanical and electrical systems.

Duties

This position serves as the Civil Engineering Technician (CET) within the Canyon Country District located in Moab, UT. Under the supervision of a Professional Engineer, the CET is expected to perform a broad range of technical engineering functions in support of project construction and maintenance. The incumbent will assist the other members of the engineering staff in performing a wide variety of basic assignments in support of the resource programs such as range, watershed, recreation, fisheries, wildlife, livestock, mineral material sites, emergency fire rehabilitation, riparian areas, and the upkeep of roads, yards, and buildings. Major duties include but are not limited to:

  • Performs survey and design of roads
  • Assists in accomplishing engineering projects.
  • Performs a broad range of inspection functions.
  • Prepares and administers engineering construction, supply, and service contracts.

Evaluations:

For the GS-07  level:
  • Knowledge of agency policies, procedures and practices to carry out the engineering portion of the annual work plan.
  • Knowledge of engineering practices and principles in order to evaluate, design and administer engineering projects.
  • Ability to use basic equipment necessary to carry out the engineering activities. This equipment, among other things, includes computers to perform engineering applications.
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing in order to prepare reports, participate as a team member, maintain contacts, promote ideas, and make recommendations.
 

 

 
Qualifications:

Specialized Experience: In order to be rated as qualified for this position, we must be able to determine that you meet the specialized experience requirement – please be sure to include this information in your resume. To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade.

For the GS-07 level: 
Specialized Experience: Applicants must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-06 level in the Federal service, as a civil engineering technician, or in a directly related position where you planned & carried out assignments referring unusual problems or deviations from standard procedures to your supervisor. Examples include performing technical work in support of survey, design, and construction, with the addition of providing technical support for surveying, & estimating & preparing contracts for these types of projects. OR To substitute education or a combination of education and experience see below.

Graduate education or an internship meets the specialized experience required above GS-5 only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position.
