Duties

This position serves as a full Assistant to the Fire Helicopter Crew Supervisor with an exclusive use contracted suppression helicopter. The Assistant assumes full management of the helicopter program in the Supervisor's absence; as such, he/she has position requirements very similar to the Crew Supervisor. The incumbent supervises a crew of firefighters established to provide rapid initial attack of wildland fires, large fire support, fire use projects and other resource management projects. The primary line of work of this position is fire and aviation management. Prior experience in wildland firefighting and helicopter management is a requirement of this position.

Qualifications and Evaluations

Requirements:
To qualify for GS-07 requires one year of specialized experience equivalent to a GS-06 in the federal service.

To qualify for GS-08 requires one year of specialized experience equivalent to a GS-07 in the federal service.

Graduate education or an internship meets the specialized experience only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position. One full year of graduate education meets the requirements for GS-7.

Eighteen months of graduate level education meets the requirements for GS-08.

    Evaluations:
    Upon receipt of your complete application package, a review of your application will be made to ensure you meet the basic qualification requirements. Your rating will be based on your responses to the Job Specific Questionnaire and the information stated in your resume. If you meet the qualification requirements, you application will be placed in one of three categories: Best Qualified, Well Qualified, or Qualified. Within these categories, applicants eligible for veteran's preference will receive selection priority over non-veterans.   In addition, interviews may be conducted for this position. The interviews may be conducted on a pass/fail basis or may be scored. The job specific questions relate to the following knowledge, skills and abilities required to do the work of this position.

    1) Ability to supervise, train, motivate and organize the activities of others.

    2) Knowledge of aviation policy.

    3) Knowledge of air operations and helicopter capabilities in order to supervise the use of helicopters in wildland fire and natural resource projects.
    Qualifications:
    Specialized Experience Requirements:   

    In order to be rated as qualified for this position, we must be able to determine that you meet the specialized experience requirement - please be sure to include this information in your resume. To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade of the position to be filled.  Examples of specialized experience are direct the loading of helicopter personnel and cargo considering weight and balance, securing cargo.  Complete manifests of personnel and equipment being transported, inventory and inspect helicopter accessories, fire tools, and equipment.  Assure that needed tools and equipment are available for fire fighting tasks.  Gather and consider information on weather data, topography, fuel types, and fire behavior.

    Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

    This is a seasonal appointment; you will be in a pay status for at least 6 months, but less than 12 months a year. When work or funds are not available you will be placed in non-pay status.

    You must be 18 years of age or older to be assigned to a hazardous position.

    This is a primary firefighter position under the special retirement provisions of 5 U.S.C. 8336 (c) (CSRS) and 5 U.S.C. 8412(d) (FERS). The position is subject to maximum entry age (MEA) requirements. 

    The maximum entry-age for this position shall not exceed age 37; unless you have sufficient prior Federal civilian firefighter experience or you are a preference eligible veteran. If you are a preference eligible veteran, you may be eligible for this position after your 37th birthday. You must supply a copy of your Defense Department Form 214 (DD-214) along with Standard Form 15 (if applicable) and any associated documentation in accordance with the instructions in this vacancy announcement. Failure to provide this documentation with your application will result in loss of eligibility to receive a waiver of the maximum entry age requirement.
