Marketing Statement:
The BLM seeks a dynamic and energetic student to join its team and gain valuable work experience as a Student Trainee (Administration).

The BLM manages more land – approximately 245 million surface acres - than any other Federal agency. This land, known as the National System of Public Lands, is primarily located in 12 Western states, including Alaska. The BLM, with a budget of about $1 billion, also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estates throughout the nation. The BLM's multiple-use mission is to sustain the health, diversity, and productivity of the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations.

This position is for students accepted for enrollment or are currently enrolled and seeking a degree (diploma, certificate, etc.) in an accredited high school, technical or vocational school, 2-year or 4-year college or university, graduate or professional school, on a full- or half-time basis (as defined by the academic institution in which the student is enrolled).

May perform a wide variety of clerical and administrative support activities. Duties may include: Use of office automation equipment and software to type and edit a variety of standard documents; establishing and maintaining a variety of office records and files; researches files and reference materials, provides routine information to general office staff, may perform other miscellaneous clerical duties. 

This is a temporary, excepted service appointment under the BLM Pathways Internship Program that is expected not-to-exceed 1 year. This type of appointment is intended only for temporary projects, to perform labor-intensive tasks not requiring subject matter expertise, or to fill traditional summer jobs.

Physical Demands: Work is primarily sedentary. Some walking, standing, bending, and carrying of light items is required.

Work Environment: Work is performed in an office setting.

Qualifications and Evaluations


Student must be able to work at the specific location in the vacancy announcement.

Be at least 16 years of age or older for a non-arduous or non-hazardous duty position.

Be a student who has been accepted for enrollment or is currently enrolled at least half-time in a degree (diploma, certificate, etc.) seeking program in an accredited high school, technical or vocation school, 2-year or 4-year college or university, graduate or professional school.

Possess a cumulative GPA of at least 2.0 or higher.

Complete a Participant Agreement in which it shall document the anticipated start and end dates for this temporary appointment.

    This position falls under the Group Qualification Standards for Administration and Office Support Student Trainee Series.

    Verification of Enrollment: Copy of all your transcripts or a list of college courses that include hours and grades from an accredited U. S. educational institution. Unofficial transcripts are acceptable for the application process, but prior to appointment the official transcript(s) will be required.

    Letter from your accredited U. S. educational institution that verifies/reflects: (1) the degree/diploma/certificate program in which you are enrolled; (2) you are enrolled at least half-time (as defined by the educational institution), and (3) your anticipated graduation date.     Once you complete and submit your application package, a review of your application will be made to ensure you meet the basic eligibility and minimum qualification requirements for the job.     KSA 1: Skill in office automation software pakages and equipment to type, edit, process, and create a variety of standard documents and reports.

    KSA 2: Skill in organizational techniques in order to provide information, obtain information, and maintain data within a records database.

    KSA 3: Ability to work in a customer service environment to discuss basic mission, program(s), and policies of the office to screen requests and provide information from files and records; advice on established procedures; and refer non-routine requests to appropriate staff members.

    KSA 4: Ability to perform clerical tasks in an office setting.

To be creditable, experience must have been equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade of the position to be filled.

    For the GS-03 grade level: six (6) months of general experience; OR have completed one (1) academic year of post-high school study; OR  have a combination of experience and education.

    The selectee of this position will be eligible for annual and sick leave.

    The selectee of this position is ineligible for benefits (e.g., life insurance; retirement including the Thrift Savings Plan; and long term care insurance). However, interns on temporary appointments who will be working a schedule of more than 130 hours per month and at least 90 days will be eligible to enroll in a Federal Employees Health Benefits (FEHB) plan and will receive the same government contribution as full-time permanent employees.

    The selectee is not eligible for promotion without competition.

    This is a not-to-exceed (NTE) appointment and at the expiration of this appointment, or whenever services are no longer needed, the selectee will be terminated from Federal service.
