This is an open continuous announcement, in which applications are collected over several months, and have multiple cut-off dates up until the closing date of the announcement.   • Serves as a lead wildland firefighter operating a wildland fire engine, performing wildland firefighting work and leading crews performing such work, i.e., wildland fire suppression and control activities including preparedness, prevention, monitoring, hazardous fuels reduction, and prescribed burning.

  • Drives and operates a wildland fire engine, positioning the engine for proper use and operation.

  • Ensures the engine is kept in a full state of readiness for emergency fire dispatch.

  • Has specialized duties such as water handling specialist, fully qualified chainsaw operator, and/or responsible for maintenance of specialized equipment used to respond to wildland urban interface/intermix situations.

  • Instructs crew members in specific tasks and techniques, conducts on-the-job training, distributes and controls work assignments and ensures timely accomplishment of assigned tasks, maintains work records, reports on work accomplishments, ensures the work is carried out safely, and reports on performance problems and issues.

  • Supervises crew in absence of supervisor.

Qualifications and Evaluations


You must be 18 years of age or older to be assigned to a hazardous position.

You must possess and maintain a valid automobile driver's license and may be required to obtain and maintain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL).

THIS IS A DRUG TESTING DESIGNATED POSITION in accordance with Executive Order 12564, and under the Department’s Drug Free Workplace Program. Applicant(s) tentatively selected for this position will be required to submit a urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use and to pass the test prior to appointment. This position is also subject to random testing for illegal drug use.

*NOTE: If location requires possession of a CDL for a specific engine type, the following policy will be in place: It is a Drug and Alcohol Testing Designated Position (TDP) under the Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act of 1991. If the selectee for the position does not currently occupy a CDL Drug and Alcohol Testing Designated Position, he/she will be required to submit to and receive a negative test result prior to appointment. A positive drug or alcohol test result may be grounds for denying final placement into this position. The Act also mandates that the incumbent will be subject to random drug and alcohol testing and that he/she may also undergo reasonable suspicion, post-accident, return-to-duty, and follow-up testing.

This is a primary firefighter position under the special retirement provisions of 5 U.S.C. 8336(c) (CSRS) and 5 U.S.C. 8412(d) (FERS). The position is subject to maximum entry age (MEA) requirements. The MEA for this position shall not exceed age 37; unless you have sufficient prior Federal civilian firefighter experience or you are a preference eligible veteran. If you are a veteran with preference, you may be eligible for this position after your 37th birthday. You must supply a copy of your Defense Department Form 214 (DD-214) along with Standard Form 15 (if applicable) and any associated documentation in accordance with the instructions in this vacancy announcement. Failure to provide this documentation with your application will result in loss of eligibility to receive a waiver of the maximum entry age requirement.

If over the MEA and you are not a Veteran, proof of prior covered service must be submitted prior to employment. Acceptable proof consists of SF-50s showing beginning and ending dates of covered/creditable appointments and copies of approved letters based on individual claims.

    Upon receipt of your complete application package, a review of your application will be made to ensure you meet the basic qualification requirements.  Your rating will be based on your responses to the Job Specific Questionnaire and the information stated in your resume.  If qualified, your score may range from 70-100 points.  In addition, interviews may be conducted for this position.  The interviews may be conducted on a pass/fail basis or may be scored.  The job specific questions relate to the following knowledge, skills and abilities required to do the work of this position.

    KSA 1 - Knowledge of strategies, tactics and suppression methods used in containment and control of wildfires.
    KSA 2 - Knowledge of wildland fire management techniques as it pertains to fire engine, pump operations, hose lays and hand crew operations.
    KSA 3 - Ability to serve as a working leader over crew members, instructing them in specific tasks and techniques and controlling work assignments.
    KSA 4 - Knowledge of prescribed fire techniques.
    KSA 5 - Skill in oral and written communications. 

    Specialized Experience Requirements: In order to be rated as qualified for this position, we must be able to determine that you meet the specialized experience requirement - please be sure to include this information in your resume. To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade of the position to be filled.

    To qualify for the GS-06 grade level, 1 year (12 months) of specialized experience equivalent to GS-05 is required.  Examples of work experience include, but are not limited to: Serving as a senior crewmember of an engine or hand crew; performing all aspects of wildland and fire operations including preparation, ignition, monitoring, holding, and mop-up; and performing fire engine operations including starting pump engine, priming pump, adjusting engine speed and pump valves, laying hose, and using appropriate nozzles and nozzle adjustments OR 18 semester hours of graduate education which is DIRECTLY related to work of the position OR equivalent combination of specialized experience and education.

    Substitution of Education for Experience:
    For GS-06: 18 semester hours of graduate education which is DIRECTLY related to work of the position OR an equivalent combination of specialized experience and education.

    Time-in-Grade: Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade requirement in accordance with 5 CFR 300.604.  If you are a current Federal employee in the General Schedule (GS) pay plan and applying for a promotion opportunity, you must have completed a minimum of 52 weeks at the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the position being filled.

    This position has been identified as one of the key fire management positions under the Interagency Fire Program Management (IFPM) Standard. This position has been categorized as a Senior Firefighter (SFF), and requires selectee to meet the minimum qualification standards for IFPM prior to being placed into the position.     Selective Placement Factor(s): This position requires a special qualification that has been determined to be essential to perform the duties and will be used as a screen out element.  Those who do not provide evidence they possess the following selective factor(s) will be rated not qualified.

    1) This position is a Primary Firefighter position and is subject to a maximum entry age (MEA).  The MEA is the date immediately preceding your 37th birthday.  Applicants must not have reached age 37 at the time of appointment, unless proof is provided of prior Federal service in another primary covered position, or you are a preference eligible veteran.

    2) To meet IFPM requirements for this position, you must have possessed all of the following National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) incident management qualifications and training requirements to be considered eligible for this position (currency not required):

    A) Firefighter Type 1 (FFT1), AND;
    S-290 “Intermediate Fire Behavior”

    Physical Demands: Duties involve rigorous fieldwork requiring above average physical performance, endurance, and superior conditioning. Work requires prolonged standing, walking over uneven ground, and recurring bending, reaching, lifting and carrying of heavy items.

    Work Environment: Work is primarily performed in forest and range environments in steep terrain where surfaces may be extremely uneven, rocky, covered with vegetation, and in smoky conditions.

    This position may require regular and recurring overtime and shift work during fire season.

    Passage of a pre-employment physical is required. You must also pass the work capacity test for arduous positions.

    Incumbent must meet specified levels on annual physical fitness tests, and pass periodic medical exams for wildland fire personnel, commensurate with current incident management qualifications.
